An emerging trend in coworking is the use of co-location space, which has seen increasing acceptance in recent years as the e-commerce market grows.
A joint storage space is a warehouse divided into smaller sections that companies can rent.
Leasing joint warehouse space offers start-ups and other companies with limited-scale production or distribution needs an area that suits their needs, as well as offering many of the additional advantages of more conventional office co-working arrangements.
These benefits include networking opportunities, common areas and refreshments, as well as the availability of conference rooms and desktop workspace.

The increase in the number of companies using a co-working storage space has led to it being seen as “the next big thing” in coworking. In addition, there are reports that this trend has experienced significant uptake in the industrial sector.
It has also benefited from significant growth in the e-commerce sector, which in 2021 recorded $870 billion in online retail sales in the United States alone, an increase of more than 50% over 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic (all figures in USD).
Meanwhile, the growth of co-warehousing has opened up new opportunities for suppliers. U.S.-based ReadySpaces raised an additional $20 million in debt at the end of 2022, which the company said it would use to drive growth, with 32 existing co-storage spaces.
For anyone working in e-commerce or producing goods on a scale that requires only a limited footprint, renting joint storage space could be an ideal option.
Four key advantages of using a joint storage space are discussed below.

4 advantages of a joint storage space
1) Adequate space
One of the main advantages of a joint storage space is that it provides the user with a production or distribution area that is tailored to their needs. A typical sized warehouse is usually at least 465 square meters, which for many companies is too much.
For start-ups or smaller companies, renting a part of a warehouse is more than enough to carry out all their activities, while there is always the opportunity to rent additional floor space in a joint storage space when the company grows.
Of course, that will depend on availability. However, the ability to increase or decrease the rentable area is just one of the ways in which a joint storage space offers flexibility to users.
2) Flexible contracts
Traditionally, warehouses are leased in their entirety and for periods of at least five years. In the past, this relegated many new and small companies in need of production or logistics space to working out of garages and warehouses, or to negotiating the use of a small part of another company’s warehouse.
However, renting joint storage space is much more flexible, and rental periods tend to be significantly shorter. This makes it ideal for smaller companies, especially those that anticipate growth that will require more space in a few months or years.
It also means that smaller companies can set up in a space designated for their use, but without the risk of signing a long-term lease or ending up with far more space than they can use.
3) Profitability
Although the cost of a joint storage space per square meter will be higher than renting an entire warehouse, it will still be cheaper overall because the user only rents a small portion of the space.
In addition to saving on rent, you will also pay less in utilities, which will be a source of waste for a company renting much more space than its needs require.
Other additional costs associated with renting a full warehouse – such as after-hours security – will also be reduced and integrated into the rental price.
4) Additional benefits
As mentioned, another major advantage of using a co-working space is the additional benefits it brings, similar to those found in office-based coworking spaces.
These include common areas, refreshments, networking events, opportunities to share resources with other co-warehousing users, and the availability of conference rooms to hold meetings and receive guests.
Additional features may include facilities and equipment for taking product photos and the availability of shared loading docks and personnel to assist in the movement of goods.
